Sonny Gray’s No-Hit Bid Ends in 8th Inning Against Yankees

BOSTON (AP) — Red Sox pitcher Sonny Gray was on the verge of history Sunday night, but his no-hit bid against the New York Yankees came to an end when Amed Rosario hit a clean single up the middle with one out in the eighth inning.

It was Gray’s 97th pitch of the night when Rosario grounded the ball through the middle against his former team, breaking up what had been a masterful outing. Boston still held a 2-0 advantage at that point.

Through the first seven innings, Gray had been dominant — striking out eight batters and issuing just one walk — as the Red Sox pushed to complete a four-game sweep of their storied rival.

The defense gave Gray a helping hand in the third inning when outfielder Wilyer Abreu made a spectacular play, sprinting at full speed to haul in a sinking ball with a sliding grab in shallow right field, robbing Austin Wells of a base hit.

Gray had retired his first 14 batters in a row before issuing a walk to Rosario with two outs in the fifth inning.

On the other side, Yankees starter Carlos Rodón was also sharp early, keeping Boston hitless through the first three innings. The spell was broken in the fourth when Caleb Durbin laced a two-run single with one out, giving the Red Sox the lead.
