Authorities in Germany are reporting that at least one person was killed and another remains missing after a small aircraft went down and struck a house in northern Germany on Saturday, according to police.
The plane lost altitude for reasons that investigators are still working to determine, ultimately crashing through the roof of a single-family residence in a neighborhood in Ganderkesee, located in the Lower Saxony region. Police from the nearby city of Oldenburg confirmed the incident.
Officials say the aircraft had two people on board at the time of the crash. One of those individuals died as a result, while rescue teams continued searching for the second person, according to the German news agency dpa.
The family living in the home was fortunate to be away when the plane came down, dpa reported, meaning no residents were inside at the time of impact.
A crisis intervention team was deployed to the scene to offer support to bystanders and neighbors who had witnessed the crash or were near the accident site. As a precaution, residents within roughly 100 meters of the crash site were asked to leave their homes temporarily.
Authorities also shut off electricity along the entire stretch of road where the home is located, citing safety concerns related to the incident.
