SOUTHPORT, England — American golfer Sam Burns will tee off in Sunday’s final round of the 154th British Open holding a two-stroke advantage at 10 under par, as he chases his first major title and a chance to become the 13th consecutive first-time winner at golf’s most storied major championship.
Despite Burns’ lead, a number of top competitors are lurking and ready to make a move should he stumble. Among them is world number one Scottie Scheffler, who entered his fourth round six strokes back but quickly got off to a hot start by making birdies on each of his first two holes at a sun-drenched Royal Birkdale.
English fan favorite Tommy Fleetwood, who is attempting to become the first English player to claim the Open title since Nick Faldo did so in 1992, will begin the day five shots behind Burns. Hard-hitting American Bryson DeChambeau sits just four shots off the lead heading into the final 18 holes.
