Notah Begay III, a four-time winner on the PGA Tour who has dedicated much of his life to supporting Native American youth and their communities, was announced Monday as the 2026 recipient of the prestigious Payne Stewart Award.
The annual honor is presented to a player who reflects the values of the late Payne Stewart — character, charity, and sportsmanship.
Begay, recognized as the only full-blooded Native American to have played on the PGA Tour, expressed deep gratitude for the recognition in a press release. “Payne Stewart represented the very best of our game, not only in how he competed, but in how he lived his life and gave back to others. To be associated with his legacy is truly special,” he said.
He continued: “Golf has given me a platform to serve, and I’ve always believed it’s our responsibility to use that platform to uplift others, especially the next generation. This recognition allows me to make a meaningful impact in the communities I’ve had the privilege to represent.”
Since stepping away from competitive play, Begay has moved into broadcasting, currently serving as an analyst for Golf Channel. Throughout his career and beyond, he has worked to mentor young Native Americans and open doors for greater access to the game of golf within their communities.
In 2005, Begay established the NB3 Foundation, an organization centered on improving the health, development, and physical activity of Native American children.
The formal presentation of the award will take place on August 25 at the Payne Stewart Award Ceremony, held alongside the 2026 TOUR Championship in Atlanta.
Payne Stewart, an American golfer who won 11 times on the PGA Tour — including three major championships — died in a plane crash in 1999.
