Severe weather forced the postponement of the Borchetta Bourbon Music City Grand Prix to Monday at 3 p.m. ET, after back-to-back storms made it impossible to hold the race Sunday evening at Nashville Superspeedway in Lebanon, Tennessee.
The event, which marks the 12th race of the IndyCar season, had originally been scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. Sunday.
Complications began even before the first raindrop fell. The IndyCar Series’ official X account announced that the race start was being held until the conclusion of the FIFA World Cup final. Fox, which carries both the IndyCar Series and the World Cup, was broadcasting the Spain-Argentina championship match, which went to extra time and extended past 5:30 p.m. ET. Spain ultimately won the match 1-0.
Once the soccer final ended, a storm moved through the Nashville area, leaving the track wet. Race organizers attempted to dry the surface, and since Nashville Superspeedway is equipped with floodlights, there remained a possibility of getting the race in Sunday night.
That hope was short-lived. A second, more intense storm swept through the area and drenched the track all over again. A Fox host on the broadcast captured the moment, saying, “The dry track has been utterly sodden in a sudden and almighty deluge.”
When cars finally line up for Monday’s race, Andretti Global driver Kyle Kirkwood will be starting from the pole position.
