The Houston Astros are dealing with a pitching setback at a crucial moment in their playoff push, placing right-handed starter Spencer Arrighetti on the 15-day injured list Saturday after he was diagnosed with nerve irritation in his foot.
The 26-year-old was pulled from Friday night’s start against the Chicago White Sox after just one inning and 33 pitches because of the foot problem.
To fill the roster vacancy, Houston called up left-handed reliever Bryan King from their Triple-A affiliate in Sugar Land.
Arrighetti has made 17 starts this season, compiling a 7-5 record with a 4.60 ERA. His performance had been trending in the wrong direction heading into the All-Star break, as he gave up six or more earned runs in three of his last four outings. Originally selected in the sixth round of the 2021 draft, Arrighetti made his major league debut with Houston in 2024 and now holds a career record of 15-23 with a 4.66 ERA across 53 games, including 52 starts.
King, 29, has been a steady presence out of the bullpen this season, appearing in 42 games with a 2-3 record and a 3.40 ERA. Over his three MLB seasons — all spent with Houston — he has gone 8-7 with a 2.91 ERA in 138 relief appearances.
