A Heat Advisory is in effect for much of the Delmarva Peninsula Wednesday, as dangerous heat index values could reach as high as 108 degrees.
The National Weather Service has issued the advisory from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday for Kent and Inland Sussex Counties in Delaware, along with Caroline County on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. The advisory also covers several southern New Jersey counties, including Atlantic, Cape May, Cumberland, and Salem.
Health officials warn that the combination of soaring temperatures and high humidity can quickly lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke — both serious and potentially life-threatening conditions.
Residents are urged to drink plenty of water, stay indoors in air conditioning when possible, and avoid direct sunlight during peak afternoon hours. If you must be outside, wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and limit strenuous activity to the early morning or evening hours.
Please check on elderly relatives, neighbors, and those without access to air conditioning.
For outdoor workers, OSHA recommends frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas. If someone shows signs of heat stroke, move them to a cool location immediately and call 9-1-1.
Heat stroke is a medical emergency — do not wait to seek help.
