A Heat Advisory is in effect across much of the Delmarva Peninsula today, with dangerously high heat index values expected to reach up to 108 degrees.
The National Weather Service has issued the advisory from 10 this morning until 8 o’clock tonight for Kent, Delaware Beaches, and Inland Sussex Counties in Delaware, as well as Caroline County on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. Portions of southern New Jersey, including Atlantic, Cape May, Cumberland, and Salem Counties, are also included.
Meteorologists warn the combination of high temperatures and oppressive humidity could trigger heat-related illnesses if precautions aren’t taken. Residents are urged to drink plenty of fluids, stay indoors in air conditioning, and avoid direct sunlight during peak afternoon hours. If you must be outside, wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and limit strenuous activity to early morning or evening hours.
Please check on elderly relatives, neighbors, and those without access to air conditioning — they are especially vulnerable in these conditions.
For outdoor workers, OSHA recommends frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas. If someone shows signs of heat stroke, move them to a cool location immediately and call 9-1-1.
And heads up — the heat isn’t going anywhere quickly. Heat index values in the low 100s are possible again on Thursday.
