German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is moving to shake up his cabinet, with plans to put forward conservative parliamentary director Steffen Bilger as the country’s next transport minister, according to a statement released Sunday by a government spokesperson.
Bilger would take the place of fellow conservative Patrick Schnieder in the role. Two sources with knowledge of the situation said Friday that Merz had been looking to make the change as a way to breathe new life into his unpopular coalition government. Schnieder added his own voice to the matter on Sunday, saying he intended to ask Merz to remove him from the position, describing the ongoing “undignified situation” as one that has made carrying out his duties impossible.
