BRUSSELS — European Union ambassadors have reached a political agreement on a 21st round of economic sanctions against Russia, according to four EU diplomats who spoke Thursday.
Two of those diplomats revealed that the newly agreed package contains a 12-month freeze on the existing Russian oil price cap, along with a one-year exemption that would permit the transfer of Russian liquefied natural gas, known as LNG, to third-party countries. That exemption would renew automatically.
The agreement also reflected a show of unity among member nations, particularly toward Greece. “Member states showed solidarity with Greece and it’s expected that Greece will do the same with others in the future,” one EU diplomat stated.
With the political deal now in place, officials said the remaining technical details of the sanctions package will be wrapped up, and a formal written procedure for its adoption is expected to be launched Thursday afternoon.
