The U.S. Coast Guard launched an emergency search-and-rescue operation Tuesday in San Francisco Bay after a boat carrying 19 people caught fire near Alcatraz Island.
Video footage from local television stations showed the vessel nearly fully submerged, with only the top of the cabin still visible above the waterline. KGO television reported that at least one person was killed and one other person remained unaccounted for.
According to KGO, citing San Francisco fire officials, 17 of the 19 people on board were pulled from the water. KTVU television, also citing the San Francisco Fire Department, reported that at least one person required cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
The Coast Guard confirmed the rescue effort was still active and that a triage area had been set up on shore. “Search and rescue efforts are ongoing, and a triage area has been established ashore,” the agency posted on X, noting that multiple other agencies were assisting. “We will provide updates as more information becomes available.”
The San Francisco Fire Department did not immediately respond when contacted for additional details.
