Australian Energy Giant Investigates Possible Unauthorized Access to Customer Data

Origin Energy, Australia’s largest electricity and gas retailer, announced Wednesday that it is actively investigating a potential security incident that may have resulted in unauthorized access to certain customer data.

The company stated it does not anticipate that the compromised data includes customers’ credit card numbers or banking information, though it stopped short of providing specifics about what type of data may have been affected.

In a statement, Origin said, “Our investigations into this incident are occurring as a matter of urgency.”

The company has already reached out to multiple government agencies, informing the Australian Cyber Security Centre and the Australian Federal Police about the potential breach. Origin is also working with the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner as part of its response efforts.
