SANTA CLARA, Calif. — San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was hurt in a car crash earlier this month and will have a reduced role as his team’s training camp begins, the organization announced Saturday on the opening day of camp.
A source with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press — speaking anonymously because they were not authorized to share the details — that Shanahan sustained a concussion, broke his nose and several ribs, and also injured his hands in the crash.
The 49ers organization described his injuries as “non-life-threatening” and offered thanks to the first responders who were on the scene of last week’s crash.
With Shanahan sidelined, assistant head coach and offensive line coach Chris Foerster will take the reins when the team holds its first practice on Sunday. Coordinators Klay Kubiak, Raheem Morris, and Brant Boyer will also play key roles in running the team during that time.
This marks Shanahan’s 10th year leading the 49ers, and he is widely considered one of the sharpest offensive minds in professional football. Under his leadership, San Francisco has reached the Super Bowl twice — following the 2019 and 2023 seasons — and also appeared in the NFC Championship Game after both the 2021 and 2022 seasons.
In his time with the franchise, Shanahan has compiled a combined regular season and playoff record of 91-72, placing him third in team history in total wins, behind only George Seifert (108) and Bill Walsh (102).
Despite a wave of injuries that plagued the roster last season, the 49ers still managed a 12-5 regular season finish and secured a playoff victory. Shanahan’s efforts earned him fifth place in the voting for the AP NFL Coach of the Year award.
