At least 21 people were hurt Saturday after a multi-alarm fire tore through a neighborhood in the Queens borough of New York City, according to officials.
The New York Fire Department confirmed in a statement that 19 of those injured were firefighters, all of whom were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. Five of those firefighters suffered moderate to serious injuries, and one was hospitalized in serious condition, according to local TV station PIX 11.
CBS News New York reported that none of the injured faced life-threatening conditions from the blaze, which broke out in the Flushing neighborhood.
The fire ignited around 10 a.m. Eastern time near College Point Boulevard and quickly spread to two buildings adjacent to the original structure, the Fire Department said.
Images posted on the PIX 11 website captured thick smoke swallowing a row of homes, a large number of emergency vehicles stationed at the scene, and a firefighter shooting water from the top of a ladder truck.
A number of residents inside the home where the fire originated had to be rescued, PIX 11 reported.
