WASHINGTON — The United States has put its military campaign against Iran on hold to create an opening for diplomatic talks, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations said in a television interview Sunday.
“He’s giving talks some space, he’s giving it a little bit of room,” Mike Waltz told Fox News, referring to President Donald Trump’s decision to pause the ongoing conflict.
Waltz offered no additional details about the specifics of any ongoing negotiations. However, the weekend saw a notable quiet in hostilities — the Pentagon halted its bombing campaign after 13 straight nights of escalating strikes, and there were no reports of Iran launching attacks on neighboring countries during that time.
When asked about the sudden pause in military activity, a senior official within the Trump administration explained Saturday that the president “has always been clear that his preference is diplomacy, but he has shown Iran what will happen if they fail to come to the table in a serious way.”
