Russia called Moldova’s top diplomat in for a formal meeting at its foreign ministry on Tuesday, lodging a protest over what it described as mistreatment of Russian embassy personnel stationed in the Moldovan capital of Chisinau.
The Russian Foreign Ministry outlined two separate recent incidents in which embassy staff were reportedly subjected to unnecessary holdups at a border crossing and random checks of their documents while traveling through Chisinau.
One of those incidents took place over the weekend. According to Moscow, Moldovan police “used force and threats of detention against Embassy staff” during that encounter.
Moldova’s ambassador, Lilian Darii, was brought in to hear Russia’s concerns directly. During that meeting, Russian officials made clear that Moscow considers itself entitled to respond in kind, stating that Russia maintains the right to take retaliatory measures.
