DETROIT — Kansas City Royals manager Matt Quatraro was absent from the team Thursday evening due to a personal matter, missing the start of a series against the Detroit Tigers.
The Royals offered no additional details about the situation but indicated they anticipate Quatraro rejoining the club in the near future.
With Quatraro away, Paul Hoover took over as acting manager for the series opener in Detroit. Vance Wilson filled the bench coach role, and José Alguacil handled third base coaching duties. All three are expected to remain in those positions until Quatraro returns.
This past offseason, Kansas City signed Quatraro to a three-year contract extension keeping him with the organization through 2029, with a team option available for 2030. He took over the managerial role after the 2022 season, replacing Mike Matheny, and has compiled a 267-322 record across more than three seasons at the helm.
Quatraro guided the Royals to 82 wins last year and 86 victories in 2024, giving the franchise back-to-back winning seasons for the first time in ten years. He earned a runner-up finish in AL Manager of the Year voting last season. However, Kansas City’s record this year currently sits among the worst in the major leagues.
