Pew Research: 40% of Americans Identify as Protestant, Non-Religious Group at Record High

A newly released survey from the Pew Research Center is shedding light on the current state of religious identity across the United States. According to the findings, four in ten American adults — 40% — identify as Protestant Christians, making it the largest faith group in the country.

Catholics make up the second-largest group at 21%, while all other faith communities combined account for nine percent of the adult population.

Perhaps the most notable finding is the continued rise of Americans who do not identify with any religion. The survey found that 28% of respondents described themselves as atheist, agnostic, or simply having no particular religious affiliation. Pew researchers say that figure is the highest they have ever recorded for that category, and the group has grown dramatically over the past 20 years.
