The Miami Marlins finally ended their misery Monday night, snapping a franchise-record 12-game losing streak with an 8-7 walk-off victory over the visiting Philadelphia Phillies. Griffin Conine delivered the decisive blow — a walk-off single that capped a dramatic three-run ninth inning for Miami.
Heriberto Hernandez and Conine both went deep for the Marlins, who had not tasted victory since July 9. Miami looked headed for yet another defeat before Hernandez came through with a two-run single off Jhoan Duran (1-4), who had blown just one save all season prior to Monday’s outing, knotting the score and setting the stage for Conine’s heroics.
The ninth-inning rally began with Jakob Marsee singling up the middle and moving to third on Otto Lopez’s single to right field. Duran then hit Kyle Stowers with a pitch to load the bases, and Hernandez’s single up the middle tied the game at 7-7 before Conine finished it off.
For Philadelphia, Bryce Harper launched a two-run homer early in the game, and J.T. Realmuto drove in two runs as well. Starting pitcher Zack Wheeler had a rough outing, lasting just three innings while surrendering a season-high five runs on six hits. The Phillies have now lost seven of ten since the All-Star break.
Pirates 3, Diamondbacks 2 (10 innings)
Brandon Lowe’s RBI single in the bottom of the tenth inning scored Billy Cook and lifted host Pittsburgh past Arizona. Lowe’s game-winning hit off reliever Taylor Clarke (2-2) got past first baseman Ildemaro Vargas, with Lowe finishing the night with three hits and two RBIs. Max Kepler had three hits and two RBIs for Arizona, but with the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the tenth, he lined out to center against Mason Montgomery (4-3).
Yankees 9, White Sox 5
Jazz Chisholm Jr. contributed two hits and two RBIs, and Ali Sanchez blasted his first career major league home run in the eighth inning to blow the game open as visiting New York topped Chicago. The Yankees overcame a three-run early deficit for their fourth win in five games, scoring five combined runs in the seventh and eighth innings. Jasson Dominguez and Ben Rice each had two hits for New York. Chicago committed three errors, and the AL Central-leading White Sox saw their lead over the second-place Cleveland Guardians shrink to two games.
Mets 14, Braves 3
Francisco Lindor crushed two home runs and drove in six runs as New York routed visiting Atlanta. Tyrone Taylor went 3-for-5 with a three-run homer, and Marcus Semien added three hits and a homer for the Mets, who won back-to-back games for the first time since July 8-9. Starter Zac Thornton (2-1) went 6 1/3 innings, giving up three runs on six hits. Atlanta reliever Connor Thomas (0-1) was roughed up for 11 runs on 10 hits across 2 2/3 innings, while Ozzie Albies homered, singled, and drove in three for the Braves.
Rangers 7, Mariners 3
Joc Pederson homered in each of the first two innings as Texas defeated Seattle in Arlington, Texas. Ezequiel Duran and Jake Burger also went deep in the third for the Rangers, who won three of four in the series and extended their lead atop the AL West to 2 1/2 games over Seattle. Seven of Texas’s 11 hits went for extra bases, including a pair of doubles from Brandon Nimmo and one from Evan Carter. Randy Arozarena homered for the Mariners, who have dropped five of their last six.
Orioles 8, Tigers 5
Coby Mayo homered and drove in three runs as visiting Baltimore powered past Detroit. Leody Taveras and pinch hitter Tyler O’Neill also went deep for the Orioles, while Jackson Holliday had four hits and scored twice. Grant Wolfram (3-2) earned the win with 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief. Detroit starter Keider Montero (7-6) surrendered six runs — four earned — and nine hits in 4 1/3 innings. Hao-Yu Lee drove in two runs for the Tigers, who have now lost three straight.
Blue Jays 3, Nationals 2
Luis Urias homered, Myles Straw had two hits, and Toronto defeated Washington in Max Scherzer’s return to the nation’s capital. Scherzer, who spent 6 1/2 seasons in Washington and won a World Series with the Nationals in 2019, came off the injured list to start the game. He allowed one run on four hits over 2 2/3 innings. Mason Fluharty (5-1) threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings for the win. Andres Chaparro homered for Washington, which had won two straight before the loss.
Cubs 7, Cardinals 3
Alex Bregman and Nico Hoerner each homered and collected four hits apiece as Chicago opened a four-game series in St. Louis with a victory. Bregman doubled twice and drove in two runs, while Hoerner finished with four RBIs. The Cubs racked up 14 hits and won for the third time in four games. David Peterson (6-7) held St. Louis to two runs on three hits over 5 2/3 innings. Jose Fermin hit a solo homer and Masyn Winn had two hits for the Cardinals, who have lost eight of 11 since the All-Star break.
Astros 6, Angels 4
LaMonte Wade Jr. drew a bases-loaded walk to drive in the go-ahead run during a four-run ninth inning as Houston rallied past Los Angeles in Anaheim, California. The decisive rally featured just one hit — a single that did not produce a run. Taylor Trammell homered, walked twice, was hit by a pitch and scored twice for the Astros, who earned their sixth win in seven games. Reliever Cristian Javier (1-1) was dominant, allowing three hits and no walks over five shutout innings with seven strikeouts. Vaughn Grissom went 3-for-5 with a homer and two RBIs for the Angels, who lost for the ninth time this season when holding a lead after eight innings.
Red Sox 4, Athletics 2
Ceddanne Rafaela hit his first career grand slam as red-hot Boston won for the 18th time in 20 games, defeating the Athletics in West Sacramento, California. Payton Tolle (6-6) struck out seven and allowed two runs over 5 1/3 innings, and Aroldis Chapman worked out of a ninth-inning jam to record his 25th save in 27 chances. Tyler Soderstrom and Jonah Heim homered for the Athletics, who have now lost 24 of their last 30 games.
Giants 3, Brewers 0
Tyler Mahle held Milwaukee to three hits over six-plus innings and Grant McCray hit a two-run homer as San Francisco shut out the visiting National League Central leaders. Mahle (3-9) never allowed a runner past second base, benefiting from three double plays. The Giants took the lead for good in the third inning, earning their third win in four games on their current homestand. Brewers starter Brandon Sproat (3-6) went six innings and was charged with all three San Francisco runs on six hits.
