
Scientists in the United Kingdom are expressing serious concern after the British government announced it will cut funding to one of the most famous radio telescopes in the world — the Lovell telescope at Jodrell Bank Observatory, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in northwest England.
U.K. Research and Innovation, the government’s funding body, announced Monday that it will no longer support the Lovell telescope, which features a massive 250-foot-wide (76-meter-wide) parabolic dish that has become a recognizable landmark in the region. The telescope is one of seven that make up a nationwide network called e-Merlin, which is connected to the Jodrell Bank astrophysics center located south of Manchester.
According to UKRI, public funding for the telescope network will end after March 2028, following what it described as “a rigorous prioritization process to focus investment on the areas that will deliver the greatest long-term scientific capability, impact and value for the U.K.”
University of Manchester particle physicist Brian Cox did not mince words, calling the cuts “devastating and irreversible.”
Paul Howarth, president of the Institute of Physics, described the recent wave of physics funding cuts — including those affecting Jodrell Bank — as “a terrible blow to the scientific community.” He called on the new Prime Minister Andy Burnham to take a second look at the decision.
“For the sake of U.K. physics and our national reputation as a place to do science, conduct research and innovate, we would urge the new government to review this ruinous set of decisions,” Howarth said.
The University of Manchester, which oversees the e-Merlin network, is now searching for alternative sources of support from businesses, government agencies, or charitable organizations.
Sarah Sharples, the university’s dean of science and engineering, warned of what could happen if those efforts fall short. “But, if we don’t find those alternative sources of funding, then there is a risk that as of the end of March 2028, the Lovell Telescope will not be an actively functioning scientific facility for radio astronomy,” she said.
Completed in 1957, the Lovell telescope has a storied history in the field of radio astronomy, which examines distant objects in space by detecting the radio waves they produce. It tracked the Soviet Union’s Sputnik satellite — the first artificial satellite ever launched into Earth’s orbit — in 1957, received the earliest images from the moon’s surface in 1966, and has since contributed to discoveries involving distant galaxies, black holes, quasars, pulsars, and gravitational lenses. During the Cold War, it also served as an early-warning system for Soviet missiles.
It’s worth noting that the public-facing engagement center at Jodrell Bank, which has welcomed generations of British schoolchildren over the years, will not be impacted by the funding cuts.
