Giants Shut Out Mariners 7-0 Behind Grand Slam, Strong Pitching to Open Series

The San Francisco Giants wasted no time getting back to business after the All-Star break, shutting out the Seattle Mariners 7-0 Friday evening in the first game of a three-game interleague series at Seattle.

Willy Adames provided the big blow with a grand slam, while starting pitcher Landen Roupp was nearly untouchable over seven innings, surrendering just two hits in the dominant performance.

Bryce Eldridge contributed a two-run home run for San Francisco, which has now won three straight games — matching the longest winning streak the team has put together all season.

Roupp, who improved to 7-8 on the year, kept the Mariners largely off the bases. The right-hander gave up a two-out single to Josh Naylor in the fourth and a leadoff single to Luke Raley in the fifth. He walked three and struck out two over his seven innings of work.

The game remained scoreless through four innings before the Giants broke through in the fifth. Drew Cavanaugh singled to right with one out, and two batters later, Eldridge launched an 0-1 splitter from Mariners starter Bryce Miller over the fence in right-center field, putting San Francisco ahead 2-0.

The Giants tacked on an unearned run in the sixth inning. Heliot Ramos reached on a leadoff single to left, and while Jung Hoo Lee grounded to first baseman Naylor — forcing Ramos at second — shortstop Colt Emerson’s throw to Miller covering the bag went awry, allowing Lee to advance to second. After Drew Gilbert was hit by a pitch with two outs, the Mariners turned to left-handed reliever Jose A. Ferrer, who walked Cavanaugh to load the bases. Luis Arraez then hit a grounder that second baseman Cole Young bobbled for an error, allowing a run to score and pushing the lead to 3-0.

San Francisco put the game out of reach in the seventh inning. Casey Schmitt led off with a single to left off reliever Nick Davila, and after an out, Ramos singled and Lee was hit by a pitch to reload the bases. Adames then crushed an 0-1 slider over the right-center field wall for a grand slam, stretching the Giants’ advantage to 7-0.

Miller took the loss, dropping to 4-4 on the season. He allowed three runs — two earned — on seven hits across 5 2/3 innings, walking one and striking out six.
