German Chancellor Merz Hints at Cabinet Shake-Up After Senior Official’s Exit

FRANKFURT — German Chancellor Friedrich Merz hinted Sunday that a recent high-profile resignation could give him the opening he needs to make changes to his cabinet.

When asked by broadcaster ZDF whether he was considering reshuffling his government, Merz did not rule it out. “It could be an opportunity,” he said.

He went further, adding, “This could be an opportunity to reconsider the composition of the federal government.”

The comments came following the weekend resignation of a senior political figure, though Merz stopped short of spelling out what specific changes, if any, he intends to make.
