Federal food safety officials say they are maintaining their focus on lettuce distributed by Taylor Fresh Foods and Taylor Farms de Mexico as the likely source of a widespread cyclosporiasis outbreak, even after a key test result was retracted.
The FDA says the lettuce from both companies remains linked to the multistate outbreak of the parasitic illness, which the CDC reports has made more than 1,600 people sick this summer.
Despite the connection, officials acknowledge that definitively tracing the exact source of the outbreak may be difficult to establish.
Cyclosporiasis is a foodborne illness caused by the Cyclospora parasite, which can spread through contaminated food or water.
