A fire-starting device was triggered Monday morning on the sidewalk outside a prominent federal building in New York City, and authorities have taken at least one person into custody, according to the FBI.
The FBI’s New York Joint Terrorism Task Force launched an investigation into the incident, which occurred outside 26 Federal Plaza. FBI Director Kash Patel announced via social media that two people suffered minor injuries as a result.
The building at 26 Federal Plaza is home to numerous government agencies, including the New York field office of the FBI itself. It also contains an immigration court where migrants have reportedly been arrested upon exiting their hearings.
Footage captured at the scene showed flames and a rising column of smoke on the sidewalk in front of the building. Additional video and images showed law enforcement officers restraining an individual and leading them away from the area.
