Authorities in Virginia have arrested the son of Kansas City Chiefs assistant coach Eric Bieniemy, accusing him of shooting his mother at their home in Ashburn, Virginia.
The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office reported that deputies were called to the scene late Sunday evening, where they found 57-year-old Mia Bieniemy — the wife of the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator — suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. She was rushed to a nearby hospital and was reported to be in stable condition as of Monday.
Her son, 27-year-old Elijah Zion Bieniemy, was taken into custody in connection with the shooting. He now faces charges of malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharging a firearm inside a residence. He is currently being held without bond at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center.
Eric Bieniemy had been at the Chiefs’ practice facility in St. Joseph, Missouri, on Sunday. He was absent from the team’s Monday workout.
The organization acknowledged the situation in a statement to the Associated Press, saying: “The club is aware of the incident involving Eric Bieniemy’s family. Out of respect for their privacy, we won’t have a comment at this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.”
