LONDON — The British government declared Thursday that its military stands prepared to defend the nation against any threat, following a warning issued by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards regarding U.S. bombers flying out of British bases.
“Our Armed Forces are ready to keep the United Kingdom safe from any kind of attacks, whether it’s on our soil or from abroad. The UK stands ready 24/7 to defend itself,” a government spokesperson stated.
The spokesperson went on to describe Britain’s layered defense strategy: “This includes through operating a layered approach to air and missile defence, provided by Royal Navy, British Army and Royal Air Force assets equipped with a range of advanced capabilities, working closely with our NATO allies.”
The Iranian warning followed notification last week to new British Prime Minister Andy Burnham that the country had recommitted to a pre-existing agreement allowing U.S. forces to operate from British bases — an arrangement described as serving the collective self-defense of the region.
On Wednesday, the British government clarified that the agreement specifically covers U.S. defensive operations aimed at degrading missile sites and capabilities that have been used in attacks on vessels traveling through the Strait of Hormuz.
Responding directly to Iran’s warning, the government spokesperson said Britain’s position has not shifted. Officials emphasized the country’s commitment to protecting its people, national interests, and allies within the boundaries of international law, while making clear that Britain has no intention of being drawn into a larger-scale conflict.
