Australia’s Lucas Herbert Surges to Top of British Open Leaderboard

SOUTHPORT, England — Australian golfer Lucas Herbert has taken control of the British Open leaderboard Friday, reaching six under par after a breathtaking start to his second round at Royal Birkdale.

Herbert turned heads by completing the front nine in just 28 strokes, carding six birdies in favorable conditions. His strong play pushed him to the top of the standings as the second round got underway.

American Jackson Suber, who surprised the golf world by leading after Thursday’s opening round, entered Friday at five under par following a first-round 65. He added a birdie on his second hole of the day, but three consecutive bogeys threatened to derail his momentum. Suber steadied himself and climbed back to five under with four holes remaining in his round.

England’s Matt Wallace posted a second-round 67 to finish at four under par, giving him the lead among players who had already completed their rounds in the clubhouse.

Fellow American Eric Cole turned in the best single round of the tournament so far, firing a six-under 64 to make his mark on the leaderboard.

Reigning champion Scottie Scheffler, sitting at two under par, was scheduled to tee off at 1404 GMT.
