A U.S. citizen who contracted the Ebola virus while in the Democratic Republic of Congo has been released from Frankfurt University Hospital following a full recovery, according to a statement from the hospital.
The patient was admitted to the hospital’s specialized isolation unit on July 13 after becoming infected with the Bundibugyo variant of the Ebola virus in Congo.
Timo Wolf, who leads the hospital’s special isolation unit, described the patient’s progress: “The person was brought to the special isolation unit with severe Ebola disease. Their condition improved steadily. They currently show no symptoms and are in good condition.”
Frankfurt University Hospital is one of only seven facilities across Germany that maintains specialized isolation units designed to treat highly infectious diseases.
The unit has a track record of handling similar cases, having previously treated another Ebola patient as well as two individuals infected with the Lassa virus.
