In the long history of Sea Gull athletics at Salisbury State College, there is one moment that changed everything — and it happened 40 years ago.
Before the fall of 1986, the institution then known as Salisbury State College was a growing program within Division III athletics, but it hadn’t yet made a major mark on the national scene. After that season, the maroon and gold became something far greater — a year-round, multi-sport powerhouse known for sustained excellence and the belief that any team, in any given year, could compete for a championship.
That transformation was set in motion when both the Sea Gulls’ field hockey and football teams climbed to the very top of their respective sports during the 1986 fall season, charting an entirely new path for what it means to be a Sea Gull student-athlete.
