ATLANTA — Law enforcement officials in Atlanta are taking extra precautions ahead of the World Cup semifinal showdown between Argentina and England, a contest that carries significant security concerns due to the deep-rooted hostility between the two nations.
The Atlanta Police Department announced it would deploy heightened security measures for the match, describing them as proactive steps born out of ongoing security evaluations. The downtown Atlanta stadium that will host the game typically serves as home to NFL and Major League Soccer events.
While there have been scattered reports of minor disturbances in the days leading up to the game, the scene outside the stadium Wednesday morning was largely calm. Fans could be seen gathering at nearby cafes and bars or passing the time playing cards as they waited for the match.
Earlier in this World Cup tournament, a deadly crowd crush occurred in Mexico as fans were celebrating, but overall this tournament has seen far less of the violent unrest that marred soccer matches during the 1980s and 1990s.
Even so, officials are not leaving anything to chance. For the first time during this tournament, supporters from opposing sides will be directed through separate entrances at the stadium — a first for this competition.
The fierce rivalry between Argentina and England stretches back many decades, fueled by both controversial moments in soccer and broader historical conflicts. The tension grew especially intense following the 1982 military conflict between the two countries over the Falkland Islands/Malvinas and South Georgia in the South Atlantic, a war that claimed 907 lives.
Argentina’s security minister announced that Argentine supporters would be prohibited from bringing any flags into the stadium that assert sovereignty claims over the disputed islands.
FIFA regulations prohibit political expressions inside stadiums. However, earlier in the tournament in Los Angeles, Iranian Americans carrying flags in protest of the Tehran government were allowed entry and the match proceeded without incident.
