New Zealand’s Ryan Fox delivered one of the most dramatic finishes in recent British Open history on Sunday, sinking a 20-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole at Royal Birkdale to capture the 154th edition of the prestigious championship.
Fox entered the final hole tied with Cameron Young at nine under par, but a brilliant approach shot set up the decisive birdie that gave him a one-stroke victory over the American.
At 39 years old, Fox becomes only the second New Zealand man to win the Open Championship, joining Bob Charles, who claimed the title back in 1963 at Royal Lytham.
Fox closed out the tournament with a final-round 68, finishing at a total of 270. Young, who posted a remarkable final-round 64, finished in second place at 271. American Sam Burns, who had held the overnight lead, ended up in third place at eight under par.
