Heat Dome Threatens Corn Pollination as Advisory Hits Delmarva

Listen to the Morning Delmarva Farm Report Update — July 16, 2026

DELMARVA — A Heat Advisory is in effect across Delmarva through 8 PM Thursday, issued by the National Weather Service out of Mount Holly. Conditions are hot and potentially dangerous, particularly for the elderly, young children, and anyone with heat-sensitive medical conditions. Residents are urged to limit outdoor exposure during the hottest parts of the day, stay hydrated, and check on vulnerable neighbors. Children and pets should never be left in parked vehicles.

Crop Threat

The regional heat advisory connects to a broader national concern: a heat dome is threatening the U.S. corn crop as it enters its critical pollination stage. Don Roose of U.S. Commodities is sounding the alarm. “We’re at a crossroads,” Roose said. “Are we going to continue to be threatened? Is the heat dome going to move around and help or hurt us?” Extreme heat during pollination can significantly cut final yields, and how the weather pattern shifts in the coming days could determine this year’s harvest outcome.

Markets

Yesterday’s closing numbers showed September corn at $4.47½, up 9 cents. August soybeans settled at $12.02¼, up 9½ cents. September Chicago wheat jumped 32½ cents to close at $6.77½. At Laurel Grain Company in Laurel, Delaware, September corn bids are at $4.94/bu.

Forecast

Thursday’s high is expected to reach 96°F with smoke and isolated afternoon storms possible. Friday drops to 89°F with smoke lingering. Producers are advised to plan field work early in the day.
