The Delaware State Police are investigating a single-vehicle fatal crash that occurred on Christiana Road in Newark early this morning that left one man dead.
On May 29, 2024, at approximately 2:35 a.m., a blue 2024 Chevrolet Equinox was traveling southbound on I-95 prior to exiting the highway onto the ramp for Christiana Road westbound. For reasons under investigation, the Chevrolet failed to negotiate the bend in the roadway at the base of the off-ramp and traveled onto the grassy area west of the roadway. The Chevrolet continued in a southwesterly direction as it drove through a guardrail and crossed the westbound lanes of Christiana Road. The Chevrolet ultimately came to a stop after it struck a raised concrete barrier. A small fire contained to the Chevrolet’s engine compartment ignited as bystanders pulled the driver from the vehicle and attempted life-saving measures.
The driver, a 41-year-old man from Newark, Delaware, was transported to an area hospital, where he died. His name is being withheld until his family and relatives are notified.
The roadway was closed for approximately 4 hours while the investigators examined the scene and cleared the roadway.
