She now relies on a short-term visitor visa and says deportation could cost her her life.

Mastoor claims Taliban authorities issued a sentence of “stoning to death” against her because she left Islam and became a Christian. She says operatives attempted to arrest her during a nighttime raid on her home, but she managed to escape. Taliban officials also harassed and intimidated her parents while searching for her, she said. The Media Line was unable to independently confirm the existence of such a sentence.

When asked about her conversion, Mastoor said, “I converted to Christianity in 2019. My faith guided me to make this genuine and personal choice.” Her parents, who are ethnic Tajik Muslims, opposed her decision, she added.

Mastoor said she held a senior position in the government of former President Ashraf Ghani. After the Taliban returned to power in August 2021, she said intelligence operatives targeted her because of her faith, eventually forcing her to flee to Pakistan. But she found no lasting safety there either, living alone under the constant threat of being forcibly returned to Afghanistan.

A trusted contact in Kabul later warned her that Taliban agents were trying to track her down in Pakistan, prompting her to flee once more — this time to Qatar. She is now appealing to Christian organizations around the world for help in avoiding a return to Afghanistan.

Mastoor’s situation reflects a broader crisis facing Afghan women and religious minorities who sought refuge in neighboring countries after the Taliban seized control. Pakistan and Iran have stepped up the removal of Afghan nationals over the past year, raising alarm that vulnerable refugees and asylum seekers could be sent back to face persecution.

Since regaining power, the Taliban has pushed women almost entirely out of public life. Girls are banned from secondary schools and universities. Women face sweeping restrictions on where they can work, travel, and gather. Those who have protested have reported being arbitrarily arrested and jailed.

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation and prominent Islamic scholars have said the Taliban’s restrictions on women have no foundation in Islamic law. Human rights advocates accuse the Taliban of using a harsh interpretation of Islam to tighten its grip on power while targeting religious minorities.

Afghanistan’s Christian population is believed to be extremely small and nearly impossible to document because believers must practice in secret. Mastoor estimated that only a few hundred Christians remain in the country.

Fazal Ur Rehman Zadran, a political analyst based in Kabul, told The Media Line that pinpointing the size of Afghanistan’s Christian population is difficult because openly practicing or spreading Christianity is forbidden. He said dozens of families from the Hazara Shiite community had converted to Christianity in previous years, possibly driven in part by long-standing persecution of Hazaras, including attacks by the Islamic State group. After the Taliban returned to power, many of those families were forced to hide their religious identities, with some fleeing to Pakistan and Iran in disguise, he said. Tighter deportation policies in both countries have left them living in hardship and fear of being sent back at any moment.

Qaiser Khan Afridi, a spokesperson for the United Nations refugee agency UNHCR in Pakistan, expressed concern about Pakistan’s practice of deporting Afghan refugees and asylum seekers. He told The Media Line that while the UNHCR appreciates that Pakistan has been “hosting millions of Afghan refugees with generosity for more than 45 years, despite facing their own economic and social challenges,” no refugee should be forced to return to a country where their life or freedom is at risk. The agency is especially worried about what could happen to women, girls, and other vulnerable people if they are sent back to Afghanistan, and it has urged Pakistani authorities to ensure any returns are voluntary, safe, and dignified.

The Taliban’s chief spokesperson, Zabihullah Mujahid, flatly denied that a Christian community exists in Afghanistan at all. He told The Media Line that because there is no Christian community, Christians have no official standing in the country and no churches exist for worship. He did not respond to Mastoor’s specific allegations about her attempted arrest or reported death sentence.

Rebecca Trotter, a human rights activist from St. Paul, Minnesota, and co-founder and co-director of Food for Thought Afghanistan — a nongovernmental organization based in the United States and Switzerland that supports Afghan civil society — told The Media Line that “the international response to Afghanistan’s crisis has been marked by half-measures, symbolic gestures, and rhetorical condemnations rather than meaningful action.” She argued that “the global community’s commitment to defending fundamental human rights stands in stark contrast to the Taliban’s determination to enforce its own agenda.”

Trotter added that she believes the international community would have already openly normalized relations with Afghanistan’s de facto rulers “had it not been for the relentless efforts of Afghan civil society, both inside the country and abroad, to resist such a course.” She said genuine international support for those efforts could fundamentally change Afghanistan’s future.

Her organization is currently working to relocate 60 Afghan women’s rights activists considered to be at risk from Pakistan to safe third countries. Last year, the group successfully resettled 31 families, while the remaining families continue to live in safe houses the organization established. The group has also pushed Pakistan to formally recognize the women’s protection claims under international, Pakistani, and Islamic law.

Hadia Sahibzada, founder of the Afghanistan Women’s Voice Movement and an advocate for Afghan refugees in Iran, based in Tehran, told The Media Line that “women’s rights in Afghanistan have become one of the world’s gravest human rights crises.” She described the Taliban’s policies as gender apartheid and a clear violation of basic human rights, warning that forced deportation puts Afghan women at immediate risk of persecution, arbitrary detention, retaliation, and severe punishment upon their return.

Sahibzada argued that repeated condemnations from the United Nations and foreign governments have done little to stop the Taliban’s abuses, and that the lack of accountability has allowed violations to continue unchecked. She called for those responsible to face prosecution under international law and urged governments to avoid normalizing relations with the Taliban. Instead, she called for stronger diplomatic pressure, accountability measures, protections for Afghan women, and the immediate reopening of schools and universities to girls.

For Mastoor, these are not distant policy debates. Her immediate future hinges on whether she can secure protection in Qatar or find another safe country before her temporary visa expires. Without a safe place to go, she fears her long journey from Afghanistan through Pakistan could end where it started — under Taliban rule.

A woman who converted from Islam to Christianity and formerly held a government post in Afghanistan says she fled Taliban persecution only to find herself in danger again.
