Russian officials expressed concerns Thursday about potential conflicts between President Donald Trump’s newly established Board of Peace and the United Nations Security Council, which has been the primary international peacekeeping body since World War II ended.<\/p>

Trump initially introduced the peace board concept in September as part of his strategy to resolve the conflict between Israel and Gaza. He later broadened the board’s scope to address international conflicts worldwide, roles typically handled by UN mechanisms.<\/p>

Among the UN Security Council’s five permanent members\u2014the United States, Russia, China, Britain, and France\u2014only America has participated in Trump’s new board.<\/p>

Kirill Logvinov, who heads the Russian foreign ministry’s international organizations department, shared his concerns with the state news agency TASS, stating: “The charter of the Board of Peace defines itself as a new international structure designed to replace ‘mechanisms that have too often proved ineffective.'”<\/p>

Logvinov noted that the board’s official mandate makes no reference to Gaza despite its origins in addressing that conflict.<\/p>

“It is clear that this approach raises questions about how the Board of Peace will coexist with the United Nations and its Security Council, which is the only universally recognised body for maintaining international peace and security,” he explained.<\/p>

The Russian official also highlighted that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has not received invitations to any board meetings thus far.<\/p>

According to its charter, the board commits to conducting “peace-building functions in accordance with international law.”<\/p>

Trump serves as the board’s chairman and holds significant executive authority, including veto power over decisions and the ability to dismiss members, though some limitations apply.<\/p>
