Federal health officials are warning consumers about a salmonella outbreak tied to recalled eggs that has sickened nearly 100 people across the country.<\/p>

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration reported Friday that 98 individuals fell ill between November 21 and June 30, spanning 17 states. While no fatalities have occurred, 26 of those infected required hospitalization.<\/p>

Investigators have identified shell eggs recalled by Midwest Poultry Services as a likely source of the outbreak, though the Indiana-based company is not believed to be responsible for every case.<\/p>

Midwest Poultry Services previously issued a recall covering eggs produced and distributed from farms in Texas between June 6 and July 3. Those eggs were sold under multiple brand names and carry sell-by or best-by dates ranging from July 20 through August 17.<\/p>

Retailers that received the recalled eggs include Kroger locations in Texas and Louisiana, as well as Brookshire Grocery stores operating in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, and Mississippi.<\/p>

Farm samples collected by Midwest Poultry in Texas tested positive for salmonella, and genetic analysis confirmed that some of those samples matched the specific bacterial strain responsible for making people ill, according to federal officials.<\/p>

Anyone who may have purchased these eggs is advised to inspect their refrigerator, and either throw the eggs away or bring them back to the store for a full refund.<\/p>

Common symptoms of salmonella infection include diarrhea, fever, severe vomiting, stomach cramps, and dehydration. The majority of people recover on their own within a week. However, young children, elderly individuals, and those with compromised immune systems face a higher risk of serious illness and may need medical care.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
